Cardinal
What the tradition holds
In North America the cardinal is read as a visit from someone who has died, and as a reminder that you are not being forgotten.
Where that reading came from
Cardinals are bright red against winter, do not migrate, and stay in pairs all year, so they appear at the coldest and most grief prone time of the year and appear to stay.
The reading tends to arrive when someone is missed. That does not make it useless; it makes what you write beside it the important part.
