Cicada
What the tradition holds
Read as long patience and sudden loud arrival, and as a life that waits underground for years.
Where that reading came from
Periodical cicadas spend thirteen or seventeen years underground and emerge together in one enormous brood. The prime numbers are thought to be a defence against predator cycles.
An emergence year is a public event. If it is one, the sighting is a date rather than a sign.
