Praying mantis
What the tradition holds
Read as stillness and patience, and in some traditions as a sign to wait rather than act.
Where that reading came from
A mantis holds absolutely still and strikes in a fraction of a second. The prayer posture is a hunting posture.
They are large, rare enough to notice, and appear late in summer. A sighting is usually a real event.
