Raven

What the tradition holds

The raven is read as prophecy and as the keeper of what has not been said yet. Norse tradition gives Odin two of them, thought and memory.

Where that reading came from

Ravens play, use tools, mimic speech and follow wolves and hunters to a kill. A bird that seems to know where the story is going tends to get written into it.

A raven is uncommon enough that noticing one is usually a real event rather than frequency illusion. That makes it a better thing to date and record.
