Dog
Loyalty and instinctual guidance, and in the older material the psychopomp: the animal that goes with a person into the underworld and knows the way when they do not.
Where the reading comes from
Anubis and Cerberus both keep the threshold of the dead, and the dog has been buried alongside people far longer than any other animal. The guiding reading is not metaphor first; dogs really do find the way home.
Was it your dog, a dog you knew, or a stranger's? And was it leading you somewhere?
