Rain

Relief and grief share this image, and the tradition does not try to separate them: rain is feeling that has finally arrived, and it is read as fertility more often than as sadness. The distinguishing detail is almost always whether the dreamer was sheltered from it.

Where the reading comes from

Rain-making rites and the association of rain with blessing are close to universal in agricultural cultures, and the tears reading is the modern layer on top rather than the original one. Both are in the material.

Versions of the dream

Warm rain

The relief form, and often the end of a dry period in the dream and out of it.

Cold or driving

Closer to the storm reading than to this one.

Watching it from inside

Shelter changes the reading to what the dreamer is keeping themselves out of.
