The Sea

The unconscious at a size that is plainly not personal: an expanse that was there before the dreamer and is not affected by them. Calm or violent is a second question, and the dream usually answers it separately.

Where the reading comes from

Every seafaring tradition treats the sea as something to be entered on terms it sets, and Jung took the night sea journey, the passage down and across and back, as one of the oldest shapes the psyche makes.
