Gate 4: Formulization

Answers offered to doubt, held as hypotheses.

When it overshoots

Certainty faked to end discomfort.

At its best

Honest not-knowing that keeps thinking.

Carried and open

In a chart that carries it

With this gate in the chart, explanations come readily now; the discipline is keeping each one provisional until it has been tested.

In a chart where it is open

Where it is absent, other people’s tidy answers can be persuasive. They may be right, and they still deserve the scrutiny given to any guess.

When it is in the sky

Answers are in the air, plenty of them, and most are worth holding as working guesses. The mind wants closure faster than the facts can supply it.

Which question would you rather leave open a little longer than settle too soon?

The six lines

  1. Line 1, The InvestigatorAn answer needs evidence beneath it, so gather the facts before polishing the explanation that will sit on top of them.
  2. Line 2, The HermitGood explanations arrive almost unbidden here, and they land best when somebody has actually asked for one.
  3. Line 3, The MartyrTheories are tested by colliding with what happens, and on this line a broken explanation is the most useful kind.
  4. Line 4, The OpportunistAn idea improves in a trusted conversation, where one person’s question sharpens the other person’s answer.
  5. Line 5, The HereticOthers may hear a working guess as a promise; saying plainly that it is a guess protects everyone who leans on it.
  6. Line 6, The Role ModelFrom further back, answers look like stepping stones rather than destinations, each one useful until the next appears.
