Hexagram 19: Approach

Earth (the field) over Lake (still water held in a hollow)

Something favourable coming nearer, and a date attached to it: in the eighth month there will be misfortune. The tradition puts a clock on good conditions on purpose, so the season is used rather than assumed.

Earth above the lake, the bank over the water. The reading is that a person teaches without running out of patience, and protects people without a limit on it.

Read from the bottom up.

1. Line 1Approaching together, and welcomed. The joint move is the right one.
2. Line 2Approaching together, and nothing here works against you.
3. Line 3Approaching because it is comfortable. Notice that honestly and the fault clears.
4. Line 4Approaching all the way, without keeping part of yourself back.
5. Line 5Approaching wisely: choosing people and then letting them work.
6. Line 6Approaching generously. Good fortune, and no fault in the size of it.
