Hexagram 30: The Clinging
Fire doubled: brightness, and the fact that it depends on what it burns. Clarity here is real and it is not self-sustaining, which is the whole difficulty of the figure.
The image
Brightness rising twice. The reading is that a great person, by continuing the light, illuminates the four quarters, and that this is a practice rather than a possession.
Fire, above
Clarity, attachment, and what depends on its fuel.
Fire, below
Clarity, attachment, and what depends on its fuel.
What is your clarity resting on, and what happens to it when that goes?
The six lines
- Line 1The footprints cross each other at the start of the day. Compose yourself first.
- Line 2Yellow light: the colour of the middle. The best line in the figure.
- Line 3The sun going down, and people either sing or complain about being old. Which you do is the reading.
- Line 4It flares, burns out, and is thrown away. Brightness with nothing under it.
- Line 5Weeping and lamenting, and good fortune in it. Grief let out rather than held.
- Line 6Deal with what caused it and let the rest go. The leaders are taken, not the followers.
