Hexagram 32: Duration

Thunder (the storm arriving) over Wind (wind, and wood growing)

What lasts, and the tradition is careful that lasting is not standing still. The sun and moon endure by moving; a thing that endures does so by renewing its own shape.

The image

Thunder and wind: enduring together. The reading is that a person stands firm and does not change their direction, which is different from not changing their method.

Thunder, above

Shock, beginning, and movement that starts below.

Wind, below

Penetration, patience, and what works by not stopping.

What here is meant to last, and is it renewing or just repeating?

The six lines

Read from the bottom up.

  1. Line 1Demanding permanence too early. Wanting it settled is what stops it settling.
  2. Line 2The regret lifts. There is enough strength here for the length of it.
  3. Line 3Giving your character no continuity. People stop knowing what to expect, and that is the cost.
  4. Line 4No game in the field. Looking steadily in a place where there is none.
  5. Line 5Constancy in character. The old text splits this by role; that is the tradition, not the reading.
  6. Line 6Restlessness made permanent. Motion is not the same thing as duration.
