The Book of Changes · Jin
Hexagram 35: Progress
The sun coming up over the land: advancement that is visible, rapid, and rewarded. The tradition attaches no warning about the rise itself, only about being seen to want it.
The image
Brightness over the earth. The reading is that a person brightens their own bright virtue, which is the part of advancement nobody can award or take back.
Fire, above
Clarity, attachment, and what depends on its fuel.
Earth, below
Yielding, carrying, and what receives without insisting.
What is rising for you, and are you letting it be seen or making it be seen?
The six lines
- Line 1Advancing, and turned back. Not being trusted yet is not a fault.
- Line 2Advancing, and sorrowing while you do it. Support comes from an older quarter.
- Line 3Everyone agrees with the move. The regret lifts.
- Line 4Advancing by hoarding, and always visible while you do it. Constancy here is dangerous.
- Line 5Stop weighing gain and loss, and the way opens.
- Line 6Advancing with the horns down. Use it on your own house only. No fault, and no dignity in it.
