Hexagram 46: Pushing Upward
Wood growing up out of the earth: gradual, unforced, and reliably rewarded. This is the least dramatic of the favourable hexagrams and the tradition says its advance is the most certain.
The image
Wood growing upward out of the earth. The reading is that a person heaps up small things in order to achieve something high and great.
Earth, above
Yielding, carrying, and what receives without insisting.
Wind, below
Penetration, patience, and what works by not stopping.
What are you building slowly enough that it will actually hold?
The six lines
- Line 1Pushing upward and welcomed. Great good fortune, at the very bottom of the figure.
- Line 2Sincere, and a small offering is enough. No fault in the size of it.
- Line 3Pushing upward into an empty city. Nothing in the way, and nothing there either.
- Line 4Recognised at the height. Good fortune, and no fault in accepting it.
- Line 5Pushing upward by steps. The whole flight, one at a time.
- Line 6Pushing upward in the dark. Constancy in what does not stop, and only that.
