Hexagram 62: Preponderance of the Small
A season for small things done carefully and not for large ones. The tradition gives it the image of a bird that should fly down rather than up, and says the note should be modest.
The image
Thunder on the mountain, loud but not carrying. The reading is that a person is exceedingly humble in conduct, exceedingly restrained in expenditure, and exceptionally sorrowful in mourning.
Thunder, above
Shock, beginning, and movement that starts below.
Mountain, below
Stillness, limit, and the place where a thing stops.
The six lines
- Line 1The bird flying up when the figure says go down. It meets misfortune in the flying.
- Line 2Passing the higher one and meeting the nearer one. No fault: the smaller meeting is the real one.
- Line 3Not taking exceptional care, and being struck from behind. Misfortune.
- Line 4No fault. Meeting without going past. Going on is dangerous; be on guard, do not act, be constant.
- Line 5Dense clouds and no rain. Taking the one in the cave rather than waiting for the weather.
- Line 6Passing by without meeting. The bird leaves. This one is named as injury rather than bad luck.
