What the tradition holds
Read as knowing what is hidden, and in older European folklore as a death omen. Both readings are still in circulation and they do not sit comfortably together.
Where that reading came from
Owls are silent in flight, hunt at night, and turn their heads further than seems possible. An animal that sees when you cannot gets treated as knowing what you do not.
Owls are heard far more often than seen. If it was a call rather than a bird, write that down too: they are different events.
