Hail
Punishment weather, and the only common form in which water arrives hard. Hail is read as criticism or consequence coming from above and from outside, striking indiscriminately and stopping as abruptly as it began. It damages surfaces rather than foundations, which the tradition takes literally: the persona is what gets dented.
Where the reading comes from
Hail is a plague in the scriptural record and an omen in the agricultural one, and both readings share the sense of an unearned, arbitrary correction. The brevity is part of the traditional reading rather than an accident of the weather.
