Hexagram 14: Great Possession

Fire (flame and the sun) over Heaven (the sky)

Having a great deal, and the whole figure is about the character required to hold it without being changed by it. Possession here includes standing, attention, and the goodwill of others.

The image

Fire above heaven, seeing far. The reading is that a person curbs what is harmful and lets what is good through, in themselves before anyone else.

Fire, above

Clarity, attachment, and what depends on its fuel.

Heaven, below

Force, and the initiative that does not wait to be asked.

What do you have more of than you can carry well?

The six lines

Read from the bottom up.

  1. Line 1No dealings with what is harmful. Awareness of the difficulty keeps it clean.
  2. Line 2A big wagon to load. Somewhere to put it, and somewhere to take it.
  3. Line 3Offered to the sovereign. A small person could not do this.
  4. Line 4Not making a display of it. That is the whole of the line.
  5. Line 5Sincerity that is met with sincerity, and dignity underneath. Good fortune.
  6. Line 6Blessed from heaven. Nothing here works against you.
