Hexagram 42: Increase

Wind (wind, and wood growing) over Thunder (the storm arriving)

The opposite exchange: something above is decreased so that something below is increased, and the tradition says this is the season for large undertakings and for crossing water.

Wind and thunder together. The reading is that a person, seeing good, imitates it, and having faults, gets rid of them, which is the only increase that compounds.

The six lines

Read from the bottom up.

1. Line 1The moment for something large. Great good fortune, and no fault in the scale of it.
2. Line 2Enriched, and nobody can prevent it. Constancy is what keeps hold of it.
3. Line 3Enriched by events nobody would have chosen. No fault, if you are honest and keep to the middle.
4. Line 4Keeping to the middle, and reporting upward, and being followed. Useful for moving something large.
5. Line 5A kind heart, and no need to ask whether it shows. Great good fortune.
6. Line 6Increasing nobody, and then being struck at. A heart that never settled anywhere.
