Hexagram 58: The Joyous

Lake (still water held in a hollow) over Lake (still water held in a hollow)

Openness doubled, and the tradition means conversation as much as pleasure: the lake is the trigram of the mouth. Joy that is genuine spreads, and joy that is courted is the failure mode of the figure.

The image

Lakes resting one on the other. The reading is that friends discuss and practise together, because that is the form of joy that renews rather than exhausts.

Lake, above

Openness, pleasure, and what is said out loud.

Lake, below

Openness, pleasure, and what is said out loud.

What here is genuinely gladdening, and what are you performing?

The six lines

Read from the bottom up.

  1. Line 1Contented gladness. Good fortune, and nothing performed in it.
  2. Line 2Sincere gladness. Good fortune, and the regret lifts.
  3. Line 3Gladness gone looking for itself outside. Misfortune, and the direction is the reason.
  4. Line 4Gladness weighed up and not yet at peace. Get rid of the fault and the gladness arrives.
  5. Line 5Trust placed in what is on its way out. Dangerous, and the danger is in the sincerity.
  6. Line 6Being led by what is pleasant. The line stops there, without a verdict, on purpose.
