Hexagram 59: Dispersion

Wind (wind, and wood growing) over Water (the gorge and the deep)

Dissolving what has hardened: rigidity, egotism, a division between people that has set. The tradition treats this as a religious act, and the wind over water is the image of something breaking up ice.

The image

Wind moving over water. The reading is that the old kings sacrificed to the Lord and built temples, because what gathers a scattered people is something above all of them.

Wind, above

Penetration, patience, and what works by not stopping.

Water, below

Danger, depth, and what has to be gone through.

What has hardened here, and what would dissolve it rather than break it?

The six lines

Read from the bottom up.

  1. Line 1Help brought early, with real strength behind it. Good fortune.
  2. Line 2At the breaking up, going quickly to what holds you. The regret lifts.
  3. Line 3Dissolving the self. No regret, and it is the hardest line here.
  4. Line 4Dissolving the group, and great good fortune. Scattering is what makes the gathering possible.
  5. Line 5The great cry, and everything pouring out. What holds through it holds without fault.
  6. Line 6Getting out, and keeping a distance. No fault in the leaving.
