Animal symbolism
Swan
What the tradition holds
Read as grace and as transformation, mostly through the story of the ugly duckling and the older myths under it.
Where that reading came from
Swans are enormous, aggressive in defence of a nest, and pair for many years. The gentleness in the symbol is not in the bird.
The gap between the swan in the symbol and the swan on the water is a useful thing to sit with.
