Animal symbolism
Toad
What the tradition holds
Read as what is buried and what comes up, and in European folklore as a companion to those who work with plants.
Where that reading came from
Toads burrow and come out at night after rain, which is most of why they arrive at doorsteps unexpectedly.
A toad at the door is a wet night. It is also a fine thing to have noticed.
