Earthquake

The ground itself proving unreliable. Every other threatening image in a dream still leaves the dreamer somewhere to stand; this one does not, which is why the tradition reserves it for foundational change rather than for ordinary difficulty. It reads as an assumption failing rather than an event happening.

Where the reading comes from

The image is old and specific in the record: not the destruction of a city but the loss of the thing under it. Modern collections associate it with periods when something the dreamer had considered settled turned out not to be.

Versions of the dream

A single shock

One tremor tends to follow a specific piece of news.

Repeated

Continuing tremors are the version that arrives during an unresolved period rather than after a resolved one.

Cracks opening

Ground splitting adds the descent reading: something is being revealed underneath rather than only shaken.
